Chinese technology giants pour $18 billion into hardware infrastructure

China's top digital conglomerates are spending massive amounts of cash to secure the physical hardware required for modern artificial intelligence. In the second quarter alone, Alibaba and Tencent directed a combined $18 billion toward infrastructure such as data centers and specialized processors, according to a report by the Seoul Economic Daily.

This aggressive buying spree is already straining corporate balance sheets. Alibaba's quarterly net profit dropped 75% year-over-year, while both companies ran negative free cash flow for the period. Speaking to investors, Alibaba chief executive Wu Yongming defended the strategy, explaining that shortages in AI computing capacity are likely to persist until 2030, making early infrastructure investments essential for future expansion.

Despite the immediate hit to profits, executives from both firms express confidence that the investments will pay off within two to three years. Alibaba plans to reduce long-term costs by shifting toward custom in-house chips, while Tencent leadership pointed out that simply leasing server power to third parties provides a predictable financial backstop against potential losses.

What remains unclear is whether Chinese tech firms can convert this massive server capacity into high-margin software services before the hardware becomes outdated. While renting out computing power offers a short-term safety net, building a sustainable AI business will ultimately require domestic consumer and corporate applications that generate far more revenue than basic server rentals.
