Xteink X4 magnetic E Ink reader attachment

Hardware maker Xteink has launched the X4 Pro, a compact electronic paper display designed to snap onto the back of a smartphone using a magnetic connection. The pocket-sized reader features an adjustable front light and aims to offer a dedicated reading interface directly attached to a device people already carry everywhere.

Smartphones are notoriously distracting, making extended reading difficult due to constant notifications and bright glass screens that strain the eyes. By adding a low-power paper-like screen to the back of a phone, users can switch to reading ebooks without picking up a separate bulky device or getting pulled into social media apps.

While the magnetic design solves the hassle of carrying multiple gadgets, it remains to be seen how well the small screen handles complex book formats or syncs reading progress with existing digital libraries. Combining a phone casing with an auxiliary display could also create awkward ergonomics, raising questions about whether consumers will prefer a traditional standalone e-reader over an attached phone accessory.
