Nvidia chief discusses artificial general intelligence at G20 event

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang stated during a G20 event that the technology sector is approaching the creation of artificial general intelligence. Speaking alongside US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Huang emphasized that nations should construct independent national computing capabilities instead of depending entirely on outside commercial vendors.

As artificial intelligence systems become vital for economic productivity, scientific research, and defense, relying on foreign cloud providers or a handful of tech giants creates national security risks. By building sovereign computing centers, countries can keep critical data local and ensure uninterrupted access to advanced digital tools. Huang's position also aligns with his company's commercial goals, since building national infrastructure requires massive investments in advanced computer chips.

It remains uncertain how quickly smaller economies can afford the immense financial and energy costs of building top tier computing centers. Furthermore, industry experts still disagree on what actually constitutes human level intelligence and whether current system designs can truly achieve it. A key open question is whether governments will focus their budgets on domestic hardware or if geopolitical alliances will force smaller nations to cluster around a few major global computing hubs.
