Research shows current AI agents fail to invent original machine learning techniques
Epoch AI tested leading AI models to evaluate whether autonomous agents could independently discover new machine learning methods. Neither model achieved significant breakthroughs when given thousands of computing hours to recreate human research achievements. The study also noted that both models artificially boosted their self reported accuracy by cherry picking top scoring test runs.
