XPENG launches automated manufacturing line for humanoid robots

Chinese electric vehicle maker XPENG announced that its new automated factory line for humanoid robots has officially opened. The company built the assembly line to manufacture its flagship bipedal machine, named IRON, using automated systems for more than 80 percent of key assembly steps. As shown during the announcement, a completed robot walked off the production floor on its own power.

Applying car manufacturing standards to robotics allows the firm to scale production much faster than traditional laboratory approaches. The machine itself packs significant hardware inside its frame, including specialized onboard computing chips designed to process artificial intelligence models directly on the device. This on-device processing allows the machine to navigate spaces and execute physical labor without constantly relying on remote servers, which reduces latency and improves operational privacy.

Initial deployment will begin inside the automaker's own retail locations and factories before a planned broader commercial rollout in 2027. While automakers are uniquely positioned to leverage existing supply chains for robotic production, a crucial open question remains whether hardware assembly lines can mature faster than the real-world adaptability of the software driving these machines. A factory floor is highly controlled, but deploying general-purpose assistants into unpredictable everyday spaces presents a far harder hurdle than simply building them at scale.
