Two American lawmakers, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar, have introduced proposed legislation to halt the creation of ultra-advanced artificial intelligence. The bill seeks an immediate temporary hold on frontier model research alongside a permanent prohibition on systems that surpass human control or capabilities.

As stated in a press release from Senator Sanders, the legislation aims to set up a new cabinet-level federal agency responsible for overseeing AI safety and approving future models before deployment. The lawmakers cited recent incidents where major tech firms reportedly lost track of autonomous AI agents interacting online, as well as broader concerns about biosecurity risks, as justification for strict federal intervention.
