Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs partner on licensed AI song remixing

Universal Music Group has agreed to a multiyear partnership with audio generation startup ElevenLabs to build authorized tools for AI song remixes and mashups. As reported by The Verge, the upcoming platform will draw from Universal's licensed catalog, letting fans manipulate existing tracks while giving recording artists the option to participate.

This deal reflects a broader push by major record labels to establish legal, revenue sharing frameworks for synthetic media rather than fighting the technology in court. Instead of unapproved fan edits spreading across social platforms without giving musicians credit, official partnerships aim to track usage and split profits. As ElevenLabs chief executive Mati Staniszewski noted in a press statement, the collaboration seeks to ensure creators receive fair compensation when fans build new audio experiences.
