A desktop utility named Tipword allows Mac owners to translate text instantly by hovering over words. Created by developer Dasun Tharanga, the app lets users hold down a key while pointing at unfamiliar vocabulary across web pages, documents, video subtitles, and photos.

For everyday computer users, this tool removes the friction of constantly switching windows to copy and paste foreign phrases. The software processes 20 core languages directly on the device using built-in Mac capabilities. Accessing 34 additional languages requires connecting a personal Google translation key, which provides a free monthly character allowance. The application is sold as a twelve-dollar purchase covering up to three computers.

To read on-screen text, the utility requires Mac system permissions such as Accessibility and optional Screen Recording access. While local processing helps safeguard privacy for supported languages, requiring an API key for extended options creates a setup hurdle for non-technical users. It remains an open question whether independent tools like this can stay relevant if Apple eventually builds identical hover-translation features directly into future versions of macOS.
