According to project documentation on GitHub, a developer going by the name itsaam has published Slop Detector, an open source tool meant to flag unhelpful clutter on X. The browser extension scans written text in social media posts as someone scrolls down their timeline. By connecting to external artificial intelligence services, the software assigns quality scores to incoming posts and can blur or mark content that lacks substance.

For everyday web users, social platforms have grown increasingly flooded with low effort material generated strictly to boost engagement metrics. This extension attempts to give readers direct control over their online environment by automatically hiding repetitive or automated text. However, setup requires users to supply their own artificial intelligence provider keys, which means filtering posts will draw from personal usage balances.

Because the program checks text instead of inspecting raw video or images, media heavy posts without context remain difficult to score accurately. It is also unclear how reliably the system will differentiate between low quality human posts and synthetic spam over time. As automated text continues to proliferate online, third party filtering tools may become essential accessories for daily browsing, pushing major platforms to build similar filtering options directly into their apps.
