Slack adds software engineering agents directly into team chat

Salesforce-owned Slack has introduced a new capability called Slack Code that brings artificial intelligence assistants into team group chats to write, test, and edit software. As reported by The Next Web, the system creates temporary, dedicated channels where human employees and AI helpers from providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI collaborate on software projects in full view of the workspace.

Instead of requiring engineers to switch between chat applications and specialized coding software, the automated tools present code updates and live visual previews directly inside the team feed. As a company representative told Gizmodo, human oversight remains mandatory for critical steps like publishing changes live. This transition matters because it allows non-technical workers, such as product managers, to address minor bugs or request updates without needing to wait for an engineer to manually complete every step.

However, shifting automated software generation directly into group channels introduces fresh operational risks. Having software bots constantly generating updates within shared rooms could quickly clutter everyday communications and make meaningful peer reviews more difficult. It remains an open question whether converting chat applications into active development environments will genuinely save time or simply substitute routine coding tasks with a chaotic stream of automated channel notifications.
