Open weight models take majority share of usage on developer platform Vercel

Software developers are shifting toward publicly accessible, open weight artificial intelligence models. According to usage statistics shared by tech investor Gavin Baker from Vercel chief executive Guillermo Rauch, open source AI models expanded their share of activity on the platform from 28 percent to 62 percent over a two month period.

This shift does not mean proprietary giants like OpenAI or Anthropic are shrinking. Their overall usage continues to grow, but developers are increasingly choosing open models for routine tasks because they offer greater control and lower operating costs. For everyday software users, this trend could lead to lower subscription prices and more varied features inside web applications. Generating answers from open models still requires massive cloud hardware, meaning data center spending remains high regardless of which model wins.

While open models handle higher volumes of routine code and queries, closed systems may retain control over high margin, complex reasoning tasks. It remains uncertain whether open models can maintain this momentum once tech giants release their next generation systems. If open models close the capability gap entirely, proprietary AI vendors may struggle to justify their premium pricing tiers.
