Microsoft introduces Copilot feature designed to complete multi step office assignments independently

Microsoft has quietly unveiled an experimental feature called Project Opal for its Copilot assistant. According to official Microsoft documentation, the tool allows the AI to complete multi-step office tasks autonomously. Instead of just writing text or answering queries, Opal launches a virtual Windows Cloud PC in the background to navigate browser apps, compile financial decks, gather compliance files, and organize IT tickets on the employee's behalf.

This shift moves AI beyond simple chat interfaces toward autonomous agents that can interact with desktop environments much like a human worker. Users can watch the AI perform tasks in real time, step in to provide passwords when prompted, or take over the virtual desktop completely if the system gets stuck. Because the agent operates within an isolated cloud instance under the user's standard access credentials, Microsoft aims to keep data secure within organizational boundaries.

For now, the capability is restricted to select subscribers enrolled in Microsoft's Frontier early access program. It remains unclear how smoothly these virtual workers will handle sudden software changes or ambiguous instructions without breaking down. A key open question for businesses is whether handing off daily computer chores to AI will genuinely boost productivity or merely convert workers into full-time software managers.
