FnScribe

A new open source software tool named FnScribe has been published on GitHub to give Mac owners an offline dictation option. Built by the AlgorithmicResearchGroup, the lightweight utility lets users hold down a designated key to capture their voice and automatically paste the converted text directly into whatever application is active.

Privacy conscious users often worry about sending raw microphone data to remote corporate servers. FnScribe keeps all audio processing strictly on the computer by leveraging an embedded Whisper artificial intelligence framework. The tool also incorporates automated editing functions that eliminate filler sounds like "um" and convert verbal commands into proper formatting punctuation or lists.

While the software offers a useful convenience for hands-free typing, it is presently limited to English speech and requires macOS Ventura or a newer release. It is not yet clear how much system memory the background model consumes over prolonged typing sessions, which could potentially impact overall battery longevity on portable laptops.
