Amazon Web Services created an open-source virtualization engine named Firecracker, which runs fast, minimal computing sandboxes called microVMs. According to the official documentation, the software boots up in under 125 milliseconds and requires very little memory overhead. While originally created to power serverless infrastructure like AWS Lambda, the technology is freely available for platform engineers building custom tools.

As organizations increasingly rely on AI models to write and execute code automatically, keeping underlying systems safe from rogue scripts has become a vital priority. If an automated AI assistant runs unverified software directly on a primary system, it could expose sensitive corporate or personal data. Fast isolation tools like Firecracker establish tiny, disposable sandboxes around these automated tasks instantly, protecting host servers without slowing down response times for users.

Despite these performance advantages, running customized virtual machine infrastructure requires substantial technical expertise from engineering teams. While cloud providers offer managed options that store memory states and scale automatically, it remains unclear how effectively microVM technology will handle intensive AI workflows that demand dedicated graphics hardware rather than standard processors. Will microVM architectures evolve to meet heavy AI hardware demands, or will these workloads require entirely new security models?
