Federal judge strikes down Pentagon supply chain block on Anthropic

A federal judge in California ruled against the U.S. Department of War, striking down a government-wide restriction that labeled AI developer Anthropic as a national security threat. The court determined that defense officials unlawfully penalized the company after it publicly expressed concerns about administration policies and resisted pressure to dismantle internal safety guardrails. According to official court filings, the presiding judge found that the government lacked factual evidence of security risks and instead attempted to make an example of the firm for voicing dissent.

This decision establishes an important legal boundary regarding how much authority federal agencies can wield over commercial technology suppliers. Had the blacklist stood, private tech companies might have felt compelled to remove ethical boundaries around automated surveillance or combat applications to avoid losing federal business.
