Search company Exa launched a tool named Snapshot, according to an announcement on the firm's blog. The feature allows users to query historic versions of the internet by specifying a past calendar date. Built upon an archive of more than 400 billion saved web pages collected across two decades, the tool shows what online content looked like at a precise moment in time.

This development addresses a common headache in evaluating artificial intelligence models. When engineers test whether an AI helper can solve a complex problem, the system might cheat by pulling down web pages published after the test was written. By locking search results to a historical date, researchers can verify if an AI actually reasoned through a task or simply copied existing answers. Financial analysts can also use the feature to simulate how trading algorithms would have performed using only the web information available on a specific day.

While historic web indexes have existed for years, building date-filtered search directly into developer tools represents a practical step forward. However, it remains unclear how complete the archive will be for short-lived content that disappeared quickly from the web. As AI creators adopt temporal testing, developers will also need to see whether searching through vast historical records increases processing costs or slows down automated testing workflows.
