ChatGPT dramatically reduces answers sourced from Reddit

Data from the analytics platform Promptwatch indicates that ChatGPT has abruptly scaled back how often it points users toward Reddit discussions. Between mid-July and early August, the popular forum consistently accounted for nearly four percent of all search references inside the chatbot. However, around mid-August, that figure plummeted to approximately half a percent, marking a total drop of over 80 percent in a matter of days.

While Google's AI search features have also shown a slight downward trend in relying on forum threads, Promptwatch found those changes were far more gradual. In contrast, OpenAI's sudden shift coincided with modifications in how ChatGPT processes search queries behind the scenes. It remains uncertain whether this cliff-like drop stems from an intentional policy shift toward traditional publishers, a temporary data-collection glitch, or unresolved disputes over data usage rights.

For everyday web users, this shift could noticeably alter the tone and substance of ChatGPT's search answers. Relying less on public message boards reduces exposure to unverified claims, but it might also make answers feel overly corporate and sterile. If generative AI tools increasingly filter out peer-to-peer discussions, internet search risks losing the authentic human perspectives that made crowdsourced sites so useful in the first place.
