ChatGPT desktop app adds Apple Messages support

Mac users can now connect OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop application directly to Apple Messages. The new feature lets the assistant analyze text histories, search through old conversations, draft replies, and dispatch texts on behalf of the user.

This tool offers practical daily assistance, such as summarizing yesterday's chats or composing quick responses. However, enabling this connection requires granting full disk permission on macOS. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI claims message processing takes place locally on the user's device, meaning conversation content is not stored on company servers unless a user manually saves their chat history to the cloud.

To prevent accidental or inappropriate messages from going out, OpenAI advises against enabling continuous automated approvals, reminding users to check drafts before sending. Allowing software to control personal text streams carries clear privacy and safety risks if the assistant misinterprets context or tone.

As AI assistants gain broader control over personal communication channels, balancing convenience against security will become a major test for consumer adoption. It remains unclear whether average users will trust automated software to manage delicate personal relationships, or if constant confirmation prompts will make the feature too tedious to bother with.
