Andrew Ng Outlines Core Product Management Skills for AI Development

Prominent computer scientist Andrew Ng argues that artificial intelligence is reshaping tech roles by merging coding with product management. Writing in his newsletter, Ng stated that modern developers working with artificial intelligence must take on responsibilities once reserved for product managers, such as setting product goals and gathering user feedback. Rather than waiting for strict instructions from leadership, technical workers need to actively steer project development.

This shift means software creation can happen much faster because engineers can test ideas, make quick decisions, and talk directly to customers without waiting for intermediate approvals. As automated tools handle more of the pure programming work, the value of a technical employee increasingly depends on business judgment, user empathy, and clear communication across non-technical departments like marketing and legal.

It remains unclear how traditional tech companies will restructure their performance reviews and pay scales to reflect these blended roles, or whether non-technical workers can adapt just as quickly.
