Alibaba launches mobile agent system for operating smartphones

Alibaba's Qwen research team has launched a software system named Qwen Intelligence, aimed at enabling smartphones to complete multi-step tasks on behalf of users. The system relies on three specialized digital agents that handle step-by-step planning, direct interaction with phone applications, and rapid image generation.

This development matters because it pushes mobile devices closer to acting as truly autonomous personal assistants. Rather than manually opening apps, tapping buttons, and copy-pasting information, a user could theoretically issue a single command to complete multi-part errands across several programs. In a social media post, the Qwen team claimed their task execution tool combines direct application connections with visual navigation controls to complete tasks reliably across Android environments.

However, several questions remain about how well this setup will function beyond controlled test environments. Granting automated software full control over personal app interfaces creates clear security risks, especially regarding private messages, financial transactions, and user account access. It is also unclear whether these agents can smoothly adapt to sudden layout changes in popular third-party apps or maintain reliable speeds on lower-end mobile hardware.
