Abu Dhabi releases open source K2 Horizon model family

A research center based in the United Arab Emirates has released a new suite of free artificial intelligence tools called K2 Horizon. Created by the Institute of Foundation Models at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the collection spans six different system sizes. These range from lightweight versions capable of running on a smartphone to massive programs designed for large data centers. The creators made the software code, internal weights, and raw training data completely accessible to the public.

For regular consumers, fully public releases like this can lead to cheaper and more private digital services. Because developers can run smaller K2 Horizon models directly on a personal device rather than sending data to remote servers, future phone applications might deliver faster responses without requiring a paid subscription or internet connection. Releasing the underlying datasets also allows independent software reviewers to inspect how the technology was built.

However, it is still unclear how effectively these systems will compete against established proprietary software in daily tasks like advanced problem solving. While the Gulf region is investing heavily to build its reputation as an international tech destination, offering free software does not guarantee that software makers will adopt it. It remains an open question whether developers will build their next products on this platform or stick with better known alternatives.
